The Dangerous Journey A Tale of Moomin Valley Tove Jansson 9780954899592 Books
A late Moomin book, notable for its pictures, less so for the (intentionally limited) text. Jansson's charm remains, although the rhyming translation is a bit too cute (and lacking in the author's gentle irony). The characters are not the Moomintrolls, and those seeking the fun of the original stories may be disappointed. Perhaps for real Moomin freaks.Tags : The Dangerous Journey: A Tale of Moomin Valley [Tove Jansson] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I am delighted to have "The Dangerous Journey" again available. I have a copy of the 1978 translation of the book and have been waiting to purchase more copies to spread this lovely work of Tove Jansson to my friends in the US. Also, I want to make sure that my grandchildren have a copies. This last of Tove Jansson's picture books is less definite in line compared to the ink drawings to the original Moomintrolls but richer in artistic interpretation. They are more like her illustration on the 1966 Swedish edition of "Alice in Wonderland." The new text of this edition is more approachable to the younger readers but still has the original flare or the author. The Finns have been celebrating the 100th anniversary of Tove Jansson since last August. Well deserved tribute!
I loved these books when I first met them as an adult, but I am happy to say that my six-year-old granddaughter loves them , too. I think it is the cheerful, welcoming attitude of the moomins that makes the joy.
A wonderfully weird little tale with existential undertones and mesmerizing illustrations. Quirky, fun and very different. I recommend this book to parents looking for children's stories that are "off the beaten path."
I came across Moomin and Tove Jansson in Oct 2012 on a visit to Finland. My daughter was 4 and now 5 and loves the books and characters of Moomin Valley. This book is a little more artistic and dark then some of the Moomin books, but my daughter enjoys it and I certainly like to read it with her.
The book is beautiful. The translation I'm not so sure. Just on the second page they use the phrase "get on her wick" which I understand means to annoy, and might be innocuous in the UK (I don't know.) But it's a pretty vulgar phrase. I can't read the original so I don't know what was written there, but it seems a bit odd to me.
