Running Scared Rarities Unlimited Elizabeth Lowell 9780061031083 Books

I love, love, love this book and this trilogy. I have this in paperback and e-book, its a definite re-read. Even if you don't love this time period I think you'll be fully engrossed in this book. It has the same characters as the previous two books and if you're anal retentive like me, you'll want to read them in order so you have a seamless transition. Definitely in my top 10 Elizabeth Lowell books. 5 out of 5 Immersion Quotient.

Running Scared Rarities Unlimited Elizabeth Lowell 9780061031083 Books Reviews

Full disclosure this is one of my favorite books. I adore it. Risa is smart, sexy, normal. She's got slight body issues--thank you romance gods!--and a sharp mind for ancient gold. I love the details Lowell puts into all her stories, and the background with Celtic gold here is fantastic. And then there's the hero. Oh fan-myself-awesome, Shane is a billionaire before billionaires were popular. He's sharp, ruthless, hotter than hot, and has this yummy Alpha edge to him when it comes to his curator and ladylove Risa. There's one scene in an elevator that I sometimes reread when I need a quick romance pick me up. Elizabeth Lowell at her best. Read it. Like right now.
I couldn't help but love Ariane's courage and loyalty, and the standards she held herself to in spite of pain and fear. Of course, proximity to a strong, sensual and sensitive man such as Simon would be worth a great deal of trouble. I would love to trade places with her, wearing that uncanny amethyst dress, learning to build a fire with Simon, seeing him fighting armored renegades outnumbering him 3 to 1 to protect a woman who had given him nothing, and finally learning to overcome trauma and be intimate with him...this book is one I will never part with!
I decided to clear out my wish list recently and this book had been there for ages, so I threw caution to the wind and pressed 'one click'. I must have been out of my mind and only some good red wine helped me through this book.

I knew from the previous books that this h had been raped and it's really never a favourite plot device for me. How do you come back from such abuse? I think the author really tried to win us over with a 'magical' dress and an H with uncanny 'healing' powers but he was still so mean to her right up until the very end. The reader can put 2 and 2 together early on about the circumstances of the rape but the H is incredibly thick and treats the h very poorly emotionally. Physically he held himself back thankfully. The last 10% of the book was very good but you have to get past the first 90% of the poor h being shamed and misused by everyone.
I have loved this Medieval trilogy by Ann Maxwell (aka Elizabeth Lowell) and all the characters that she created for the three part story (UNTAMED, FORBIDDEN and ENCHANTED). The third in the series tells of Dominic's brother, Simon the Loyal, who takes the Norman bride, Lady Ariane, originally intended for Duncan the Scots Hammer before he fell in love with Amber (who we met in Forbidden).

Ariane is the daughter of Baron Deguerre, a cruel and shrewd lord from Normandy who cares not for his daughter nor did he believe her when she told him she was raped by her former betrothed, one of his favored knights. So, it matters little to her whether she is wed to Duncan or Simon and she agrees to the trade. Simon, betrayed by a woman while he and Dominic fought as knights in the Holy Land, will not risk his heart to his new bride who he greatly desires though he shows her incredible patience when he realizes she fears the touch of a man. Ariane was once among the Learned and had the gift of locating things but she lost that gift with the rape. Now she plays sad songs on her harp, her only companion.

Both Simon and Ariane are wounded souls but despite their walls, they come to care for each other. There is magic here but always the underlying belief that God is the one calling the shots and I liked that. It's a fitting conclusion to the trilogy, and though I did not think it was as good as the first one (the story of Dominic and Meg), I still enjoyed it. There was one character I loved when he was first introduced, the Sorcerer, Lord Erik of Sea Home and son of Robert of the North, master of animals and one of the Learned...so where is HIS STORY?? I had the feeling Lowell was setting us up for the fourth book but then I learned there wasn't any...so disappointing! I even tried to contact Ann/Elizabeth to ask if she might write it one day but could find no contact information for her. It's a worthy story waiting to be told about one incredible warrior hunk with a magical softer side. Ah...Erik!

[Note the added comment for which I am thankful indicates that Erik and Serena's story is told in MOVING TARGET, where they are reincarnated in the present time, but have to work out issues from their past life.]
If you read this book you should read the other two first. With that said this was a good book, but somehow I felt a little disappointed in this book. Maybe it was there was too much distance between Simon and Ariane thru most of the book. There is really no closeness, them talking, or them even getting along until around 75% thru the book which is when they finally have sex. Most of the time is spend on how unhappy the couple and their marriage is, and working up for the end where things start to happen. There is also a lot of time spend with the other couples, Dominic and Meg, Duncan and Amber, as well as Erik. Ariane thoughts thru most of the book is she can never let Simon touch her because of her being raped about a month before. Plus when she does think she might allow him to touch her, she is afraid of what will happen when Simon finds she is not a virgin. Simon spends most of his time avoiding his wife because he is mad she will not let him touch her, and he will never have kids, but he will not call off the marriage because he does not want a war to start and cause Dominic and Meg to lose everything. Even the sex scenes were not as good as in the other books. As stated it is still a decent read, but not for everyone. Also it would have been nice to have a fourth book about Erik.

Sex content low/medium
