Black Magic Sanction Rachel Morgan Book 8 Kim Harrison 9780061138034 Books Reviews

I truly love and enjoy the Hollows series, but I have to admit Rachel Morgan is in turns whiny and annoying in this novel. In Black Magic Saction, Rachel stops looking noble and is just a plain ole' bimbo. She went from being a kick-ass heroine to a punching bag. I have lost much of my respect for her.

Major Spoiler Alert

So like I stated the beginning was promising and fast-paced. Rachel is in the ever-after with Al learning new spells and tricks. Then the coven for moral blah blah blah start gunning for her. They either want to kill her or turn her into a lobotomized breeding machine. Ok cool. This was interesting. She gets sent to Alcatraz but is rescued (of course and like always) by Ivy, Jenks, and co. Then in the middle of the the book I completely had a WTF moment. The coven sends fairies to destroy the pixies and to poison Ivy, Pierce, and Rachel and destroy their property. Ceri comes to help and decides to twist a black curse to kill the marauding fairies. Rachel has an attack of conscience jacks up the curse and the fairies survive to kill Mattalina. Ok maybe I can understand this, Rachel doesn't want to become a black witch, we know we know right, but then in this scene she looks at her "bloodthirsty" friends and becomes afraid and disgusted with them. She states she even hates them in that moment. She starts to yearn for the simplicity of the ever-after and peace of Al. WTF. Her friends are "bloodthirsty" because she made them that way. They have to constantly bail her inept butt out of trouble. It pisses me off that she judges them for their willingness to protect her and kill for her and she cannot do the same for them. And she has the nerve to compare Ivy, Jenks, and Ceri to Al with Al looking better than them. Oh heck no. Al tortures and destroys for fun, her friends do it to save her. So now I'm pissed about this, but then later on in the book she willingly twists THREE BLACK curses for disguises and accepts the smut for them. Why would she not twist the earlier curse to save her friends? On top of all this Nick makes a reappearance with Rachel still defending him and refusing to give him up to Al and surprise surprise he calls her a "whore" and a "bitch" makes her feel like a slut and betrays her again for the upteenth time. Definitely a punching bag throughout the novel.
There is no sense of Rachel Morgan growing into her powers or even as a person. She was a clueless white witch (in this novel apparently white witches if they're smart enough can kill with white curses, sadly Rachel isn't smart enough), a useless ley-line witch, and completely worthless as a demon-kin. Will I continue with the series? (Sigh) yes, for Ivy, Jenks, Trent (I wanted them to end up together, but now I think he's too good for her), and Al (yeah, I even like Al. He is who he is and he is diabolical).
Rachel Morgan is a shunned witch. Her best friend, a living vampire and a pixy share living space in an old church. Except when Rachel is pulled through the ley lines into the demon populated ever-after to apprentice for Al, her demonic and mercenary teacher. As if this isn't enough, the head coven of witches decides Rachel needs to by mystically neutered, or lobotomized so as not to endanger the species greatest secrets.

Ex boyfriend and human wizard Nick and new interest Pierce, a dead witch who'd been installed in another's corpse, are major players in Rachel's latest antics. Great chemistry all the way around!

This series just keeps getting better! I have to wonder if Ms. Harrison has it all planned out or if she takes it one volume at a time. Whatever her methods, this book is seamless and captivating!
So check this out.

Rachel and Ivy are minding there own business, doing a bit of grocery shopping, when this blonde chick in a frumpy suit starts making eyes at Rachel.

Or so she thinks.

And Rachel's a little bit embarrassed, a little bit flattered, but not even a little bit interested . . . so that's AWK-ward.

But, wait! Frumpy isn't checking Rachel out! Frumpy a member of the coven of moral and ethical standards, and she's is trying to take Rachel into custody.

Like that's going to happen. Pfft. But the attempt does make quite a mess (one word---PRODUCE). And wait a minute, what's going on? Yeah, Rachel's been shunned, but there's a world of difference between shunning a witch and actively pursuing her.

I smell a rat . . . (<------did you see what I did there? *snickers*)

A couple of books ago, Rachel very sneakily stole Al's summoning name so he couldn't be called out of the Ever After and let loose on her or her loved ones. They've since resolved their issues . . . *snorts* mostly . . . but Rachel still has his name.

And that is how we find out not only can Rachel's blood kindle demon magic, but she can also be summoned like a demon, and my, doesn't that complicate things.

Especially when the previously thwarted coven of moral and ethical standards becomes privy to this information, using it to, yes, summon Rachel.

Which puts her in a bit of a JAM. (<------I did it AGAIN). B/c strawberries . . . in the grocery store . . . never mind. *sighs*

It also makes her angry. Makes me angry too, b/c guess who summoned Rachel for the straight-laced coven (whose members would rather DIE than have a bit of smut on their souls)? Go on . . . guess . . . I'll give you hint---his name has four letters, and is also slang for stealing, which is ironic, b/c that's what he does.

YEP. Nick just can't stay gone. Which is unfortunate, b/c I HATE HIM. *takes a calming breath*

Black Magic Sanction is my favorite book in the series up to this point. Al and Rachel grow in their new roles as teacher and student, and Rachel finally shows some caution on the romance front. Trent is consistently NOT evil, and even shows that he values Rachel as a person <------YES!! And Rachel finally starts to accept what she is, understanding that it's who she is that matters. LOVE it. Love it ALL.
