It is an awesome book that details the "Christmas Truce" and the before and after. It honestly helps you understand better World War I and how indeed Generals who basically knew nothing about war kept this war going with all the carnage and unnecessary deaths and maiming. I had always loved the John McCutcheon song, and this book literally explains WWI in such a succinct way. And, particularly how just a short distance behind the lines, life kind of just went on. A very very sobering and good read.

Silent Night The Remarkable Christmas Truce of 1914 Stanley Weintraub 9780684866222 Books Reviews

Very readable, thoughtful, and nonfiction parts are pretty well documented. Says a lot about the ordinary soldier in contrast to glory hound leaders who sustained the slaughter in World War 1 (which created the modern world and set up World War 2). Some speculations on what the Christmas truces might have in time accomplished are a bit suspect, but overall, the book is excellent and still speaks to contemporary readers, whose governments continue to send young people to strange places to kill one another.
This is a fascinating history of this interesting event, that event being the "Christmas truce" of 1914 during WW I. It is written in a story-like fashion that makes for engaging reading. I don't know enough about the period to know if the author has any axes to grind in this book, but none jumped out at me in any case. The author tells a tale that is both tragic in way while also being haunting.
It was the story of Godly men on both sides. It showed the humanity in war and the absolute lack of it in the fighting. It showed the big picture to be silly little men keeping their jobs and doing so inefficiently. There was no good reason for the war besides the pride of men at the top, the grandsons of Victoria. I know that there were hundreds near the top in every country who wanted the war but it cannot explain why the death of millions had to happen.
This is the best war production since Enemies are human by Reinhold Pabel.
Very much a documentary of the Christmas truce. It was interesting but none of the events were embellished but simply documented. None of the soldiers were given personalities but merely name and rank and snippets of information from letters and other documents. I was looking for a warmer, touching Christmas story. The author really did accomplish what he set out to do as evidenced by the extensive bibliography and credits.
Interesting information about the fabled event, but wearies the reader with the many accounts.Seems like more of a research paper or defense of the "happening" being a real one than an actual story (tale) of an event. We've all heard an account of this in the past, and we still don't know just how much is true and how much is rumor, imagination, or exaggeration. But a nice thought nonetheless.
GREAT BOOK. An inspiring story set against the backdrop of a Horrible War. Having been in combat I never would have believed that two opposing sides could muster the courage to lay down their arms for 24 hours. But this book shows that they did. A Great Story all the more poignant as I read it during the Christmas season. I spent 2 Christmas seasons in harms way in Beirut and on the Saudi/ Kuwaiti border. I know what it's like to be far from home on Christmas Night. This is a GREAT BOOK .
I thoroughly enjoyed this engaging piece of history. I had always thought the Christmas Truce a myth, when to my surprise, it actually occurred! Within these pages the author shares the simple accounts of several celebrations which took place Christmas of 1914. More fascinating is his look into what could have happened if WW1 had ended earlier. But we can only surmise. Another great thing about this book its audible narrator is wonderful as well. On a Fire tablet, it's enjoyable. Thanks, Mr. Weintraub.
