What can one say? I was given this book as a gift in 2005 and that night as I read it, I felt a very significant change. It felt like a spear had stabbed me in the heart.
One outcome: my perception of my own Guru changed. I slowly began to understand what my Guru meant all along, especially when my Guru said that Non-Duality was 'not for everyone'. And the best answer I got from my Guru when asked about this book: "PLEASE read it! It will give one Courage"
In many other books written by other authors on the subject of NonDuality, the language and concepts are academic and often employs complicated and convoluted hyperbole often indirectly hinting at the author's erudition and education. But in this book, NM's language and philosophy is simple and direct, based entirely on personal experience as opposed to second-hand knowledge, which makes it endearing and understandeable.
My greatest relief was that NM did away with all externalities and all blind rituals. There were no 'special times' or any Earth-centric 'Power zones' or any body-centric Chakras and stuff. He made me understand the need to be earnestly aware of the 'I AM' and dwell on that alone, without expectation or desire. This rang in me: the sense 'I AM' was there all along, from childhood, and never changed, ever. I had to be aware of all, then see the sense of the witness, anytime, any place.

To this day I have never completed this book, ever. Even now, I cannot get past a couple of pages without feeling a tremendous calmness and quiet that makes me stop reading, drop the book, get into a spontaneous state of witnessing that has no labels and definitions.

There are people who call it names: 'condescending', and 'drivel', some who focus on the quality of the book, or the supposedly grammatical errors and typos. To them one can only say that it's NOT meant for them.

One day, they'll awaken.

I Am That Talks with Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj Nisargadatta Maharaj Sudhaker S Dikshit Maurice Frydman 9780893860226 Books Reviews

I AM THAT--is the best book I've come across that so clearly reveals how one living in the state of Adwaitha--pure monism, views the Self, Life and the world. It does require one to have had considerable personal experience in meditative states in order to fully relate to what this God realized Master is sharing. Each time it is read, you can plunge deeper into your own Divine core of existence. This is a book not simply to be read, but taken into deep contemplation, Self inquiry and application in life. It has the power to reveal Divine Reality and guide you into Self realization.
As another reviewer herein comments "Even now, I cannot get past a couple of pages without feeling a tremendous calmness and quiet that makes me stop reading, drop the book, get into a spontaneous state of witnessing that has no labels and definitions." Couldn't have put it better, Krishnan. My experience as well. I have read and highlighted nearly every word in this book by the master Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, the most brilliant teacher about life (or anything) I have ever read, again and again and again and again. (Even my highlights have highlights -- layers of highlights!) Compared to every other teacher I have read about the science of spiritual illumination Advaita Vedanta (or anything), this is like the greatest jazz musician of all time compared to mere music teachers. This book is a life-changer. Extraordinarily deep, meaningful, and beautiful -- a true masterpiece of the ages. I gain more almost every time I read even a single sentence again and again and again. In my humble opinion, every intelligent spiritual seeker should read it, if they have what it takes to learn the greatest knowledge of all.
This is an amazing book of the questions asked of Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj by people who sought him out, and his answers to each of them. The entire book follows a question and answer format, just as if you were there listening. If you are looking at this, then you are probably ready to read this book. If it doesn't quite resonate, put it down and pick it up later. It's a very high level, yet basic and essential level of thought regarding all that is. Some will know what I mean.
This book is entirely compelling. I'm obsessed with it. It came into my domain over 3 years ago. At first I could only read & digest small portions at a time. Now I can think of almost nothing else. I've been a devotee of the spiritual path of "Self-realization" for decades. This clarifies much that I've encountered & feels like a quantum leap. I look forward to appreciating it more & more & eventually moving beyond the words. Right now, Nisargadatta's words are imminently helpful. A few of my current favorites
"...between the most sublime desire & the freedom from all desire there is an abyss that must be crossed."
"There must be love in the relation between the person who says "I am" & the observer of that "I am." ... realization of the basic unity ...cannot be contacted unless there is unity & love & mutual help between the person & the witness."
"To what extent are you free from the habitual tendency to create & perpetuate conflicts?"
"...there is no remedy--except one the search for remedies must cease.... [Question "What is the remedy?"]... Don't seek remedies."
"You want peace & harmony in the world, but refuse to have them in yourself."
"Just as long as a a dislocated joint causes pain only as long as the joint is out of shape & is forgotten as soon as it is set right, so is all self-concern a symptom of mental distortion which disappears as soon as one in the normal state."
[In response to question, "What is the experience that comes nearest to the Supreme?"] "Immense peace & boundless love."
This is a book whose meaning will only deepen. It's like reading a new book every time I pick it up. Very best wishes on your chosen path!
