A slow start but once it took off, it was clear why it won a Pulitzer Prize. To me the self-conscious, melodramatic thoughts of the characters was too much in the beginning and it bored me somewhat. But then the story became interesting and suspenseful. There were a few odd turns of events that I didn't see coming and the story held my interest and I became more interested in the characters when it was more about their actions than their thoughts. It's not clear what exactly went wrong in the family but there are just some families that are dysfunctional from their inception and nobody is able to recover. In this case it's a total disconnect from inner power.

Winkie had been mugged by persons unknown. Merely aspiring toward precision, he gave the detailed description of this attacker. What he couldn't understand was why he'd been singled out. Jack had been investigating the murder of an actress when called to come to the scene of this charade. It was in his district where he'd reigned supreme for 33 years. His spouse of fourteen years was causing him problems with her new, bizarre ideas about their staid marriage. The excitement had gone out of his dead marriage and Jan turned into one of those desperate housewives.

Winkie had a big ego inflated by adoring females of all ages. His motto "It's not what you say, it's how you say it" and he was the expert at perpetuating a false image. He'd received a lot of kidding about his name and had considered using another. But he was loved by his fans, too late now to try a new personna. For many years, he'd glided by all this business by keeping his distance. He'd basked in the adulation, his 'just reward' for being calm and collected at all times. Nothing pleased Winkie. He did his slot, at times called the tunes and pace, but eventuallly he was demoted (everyone gets replaced at one time or another) and took out his frustration on "someone very special" who had trusted him the most. She did not know the real Winkie, only the part he kept low-key. He could not afford a scandal of any kind.

This was such a total shock and she made a big fuss over it. He'd told her "it was not 'becoming' in the least to use call someone bitch." This time, Winkie had apparently met his match, and had to pay a penalty. She'd told him, "You'd better pray, as you will pay." This is a strong indictment on the way of the world today, not just the environment.
"Nothing can ruin your life so long as you're free to get up and run away."

So declares Stanley Timberlake before she breaks her engagement to Craig Fleming and runs off with Peter Kingsmill, her sister Roy's husband (it's a bit odd that two of the main female characters should both have male names). Running away, avoidance, hiding from the truth, and escapism are the chief means of dealing with life for most members of the Timberlake family.

Asa Timberlake has spent his whole life working in a crummy job for a tobacco company while being married to the overbearing, insufferable Lavinia. Though their daughter Stanley has run off with Peter thinking happiness will now be theirs, that all turns to dust and Peter commits suicide. Stanley, now lusting for life in fast cars, runs over a child one day and flees the scene; a black boy, Parry Clay, is implicated in the homicide. Everyone rallies around her to protect her, except Asa, who learns the truth and makes her reveal what really happened. Clay, who had been imprisoned, is released, but his promising life is now in ruins. Meanwhile, Roy, the older Timberlake daughter, who had fallen in love with Craig Fleming after Stanley had dumped him, gives up on him after she sees how devotedly he tries to help protect Stanley after her hit-and-run "accident," and decides to leave Queensborough (Richmond) for good.

The Timberlakes are not the easiest people about which to feel anything positive; not only are they their own worst enemies, but their destructive attitudes and behavior spill over onto all society and tarnish it. Ellen Glasgow's tone is bitter here, and her characterizations dark. One will search long and hard before finding another fictional character as repugnant as Lavinia or as pathetically spoiled as Stanley. But Glasgow writes with great dramatic skill; the dialogue is especially strong and believable. Glasgow is an "old-fashioned" novelist who believed strongly in the importance of narrative development and strong character portrayal, and in this, her last novel, she achieved both magnificently. The novel won the Pulitzer, and deservedly so.
I have set an arbitrary goal of reading all the Pulitzer Prize winners. I am nearing the end of my objective, and this book is one of the older, harder to obtain, and more expensive. It is not worth the asking price, and it is only worth borrowing from the library to find out what it's about.

This is like a heavy soap opera. We have a very weak man, basically good. He's unhappy. His bed-ridden, acidic wife is unhappy. His daughters are spoiled rotten. Then one of the daughters runs off with her sister's husband-to-be! Give me a break! I could only stomach the first section.

The language is clean, and there are no disgusting scenes. But this is too much!

There were far better works put out during this period. 'The Grapes of Wrath', 'Gone With the Wind', 'Dragon's Teeth', and 'All the King's Men' sandwich this work. They are far superior, and they give the reader reflections on living that are worth something.
I loved the Bette Davis film so I wanted to read the book to get more of a understanding of the characters . I was not disappointed . Loved the book
