For our genius, not for Dad (he's still married to Mom). A deadly virus has killed off most of the population, but last they knew Mom was still alive and waiting for them in San Francisco. Thus the bizarre cross-country road trip where they encounter auto breakdowns and human monsters and, through sheer genius, survive the mother of all fires. What waits for them in San Francisco at first seems like blissful safety but . . . Something rotten is buried beneath the veneer of these polite scientists. To find out what, I must return for the next book, and I have to because the story is on a roll. I highly recommend Annihilation even to those who aren't fans of apocalyptic fiction.

This story could have gone in so many different directions to make it more "edge of your seat" read. Although the theme was good, it was just too easy for the family to get to where they were going. Yes, they ran into some hazards, but again, too "fairy book" getting out of the trouble. I also think the author spent way too much time on the "power source" the main character was working on. I probably will not get the second book in this series.
Excellent series of books by K.D. MaCadamia. It's supposed to be YA, but I'm 61 and loved them. Can't wait for #4!
Is an interesting story. Characters make you think. There seems to be something hidden in the back ground, giving a reason for future stories. Can not wait to read more.
My only complaint is that my downloaded copy had three chapters totally blank. All it had was white lines where text should have been. Not sure why that would be but it was, so i missed quite a bit of the story. Still, i give it four stars.
A good young adult book that gives a different spin on the post apocalyptic scenario. It glosses over some of the reality, but does give a few scenarios of what it might be like. There quest to get to where the Mom is and what happens next is a good beginning for this series. Will read the next book in the series.
KDM has written a first novel of a series which begins with almost everyone dying from a dangerous flu. There are very few survivors perspire they end up at the Ames Research Center. One person developed a develops a dark energy source and everyone wants it. This is an excellent read for the genre..... ER
This is exactly the type of book I love. I have always pictured the end of the world like this. Just a handful of people able to go where they want, live where they want, access to all the clothing stores and grocery stores. It's a big fantasy. And that's what this book is, except to them it is real. I find that the author has taken time to flesh out the characters and they feel real. And even though the narrator, Seamus, is a genius I can still sort of follow along with him.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good end of the world story.
